THE DAILY LEDGER

31 August 2026
BTC and ETH drift lower as sentiment cools, while corporate treasury and tokenized securities plans move forward

The month ended with softer sentiment but no retreat from institutional infrastructure. Bitcoin and Ether both slipped, while traditional market operators, treasury companies, and derivatives venues continued to widen their crypto plans. Price and business development are moving on different clocks.

1. The Day in Numbers

  • Bitcoin: $78,554 at 16:00 UTC, down 0.3 percent over 24 hours.
  • Ethereum: $2,466, down 0.5 percent over 24 hours.
  • Fear and Greed Index: 62, Greed, down seven points from Sunday.
  • ETF flows: US spot Bitcoin ETFs added $216.7 million, while spot Ether ETFs added $87.6 million.

2. Today's Headlines

  1. ICIJ published records about early direct Tether customers. Several firms were later linked to serious financial crimes. The investigation also notes that Tether's sales preceded public disclosure of those alleged crimes.
  2. Strategy disclosed the purchase of 4,603 BTC for $369.7 million. The company said its holdings reached 845,050 BTC. The purchases covered 24 through 30 August, not only today.
  3. ICE and tZERO agreed to collaborate on tokenized securities infrastructure. The memorandum includes an ICE investment and licensing across 23 patent families and 103 patents, subject to regulatory and operational requirements.
  4. Hyperliquid reportedly entered advanced talks on a US route. The proposed structure would use Payward and Bitnomial to offer selected perpetual products to registered users, but approval remained pending.
  5. Flow corrected the record on an Ankr-linked collateral incident. About 8.6 million unbacked ankrFLOW were created and used against MORE Markets. Roughly 15.5 million WFLOW, then worth about $410,000, left the reserve.

3. Security Note

Early alerts put the Flow-related impact near $9.3 million. That estimate was withdrawn. Flow later said the reserve impact was about $410,000 and the attacker realized roughly $246,000 after slippage. The lesson is practical: treat first-hour detector estimates as provisional, especially when synthetic or unbacked tokens are involved. Wait for the affected protocol to distinguish minted supply, reserve loss, and attacker proceeds.

4. From the Academy Library

How Stablecoins Hold a Dollar explains direct issuance, redemption, reserves, custodians, and the counterparty questions raised by the Tether records.

Cooling sentiment did not stop institutions from building. Keep the market tape and the infrastructure cycle in separate columns.
